The citizenry is taking with mixed opinions the warning letter the FDA issued to 5 different electronic cigarette distributors. The warning letter claims poor manufacturing practices (quality control) and unsubstantiated health claims (quit smoking alternative).

In this fall, Central Michigan University will prohibit the use of electronic cigarettes anywhere inside the campus and residence halls. “E-cigarettes will be treated as regular cigarettes. The American Medical Association (AMA) in their Annual Meeting, held in June, adopted their official policy, recommending the e-cigarettes to be classified as drug delivery devices, subject to FDA’s regulation and approval.

The American Lung Association in Vermont is concerned with the little regulation that governs the alternative smoking devices. Rebecca Ryan, Director of Health Promotion states that the association sides with the FDA in regards to the device’s classification. Said classification is that the e-cigs are a drug delivery device and not a tobacco product.
